REIGNING CHAMPS READY FOR TOTALSPORTS LADIES RACE

The streets of Johannesburg and Stellenbosch will be a hub of excitement on Monday, 09 August 2010 when thousands of women take on the Totalsports Ladies Race in celebration of National Women�s Day. Participants can choose between a 5km fun walk or 10km run.

Johannesburg ~ Reigning Totalsports Ladies Race Johannesburg Champion, Irvette van Blerk will be gunning for gold at the 2010 event. According to Van Blerk, the Totalsports Ladies Race is one of her favourite races. �The previous race was very competitive as it attracted a top field of entrants. I am sure that this year will be no different. The most memorable part of the race was the support that I received from the 5km runners and walkers. Their enthusiasm carried me through the last few kilometres when I was getting tired. I love taking part in a race that celebrates the role that women play in society. I am looking forward to competing again this year,� says Van Blerk, who runs for the Nedbank Running Club Johannesburg and is also a member of the Nedbank Green Dream Team.

Proceeds will go to the Fadimehang Mental Care Centre. The centre aims to equip learners with basic life skills including literacy and numeracy, and at 18 years and older move them to a sheltered workshop where they learn vocational skills like visual art, pottery, painting, beadwork, silk-screening, crafts, etc. Idols star, Gift Gwe will captivate the masses with a live performance on the day.

Stellenbosch ~ Mia Pienaar will also be seen in action defending her title at the Totalsports Ladies Race in Stellenbosch. According to Pienaar, the atmosphere experienced at the start of the 2009 event was awesome. �I train with most of the women whom I ran against in 2009. We are all friends and team-members and I have a lot of respect for them. The Totalsports Ladies Race provides us with the perfect opportunity to celebrate National Women�s Day. There�s just no better way to create awareness for this inspirational day than by filling the streets of Stellenbosch with five thousand excited women for a two hour time period,� says Pienaar whose upcoming race schedule also includes the 10km SA Champs in August, cross country SA Champs in September and the Student World Champs in China in 2011.

Proceeds will go towards the JAG Foundation, an organisation focusing on education and sport development at grassroots. Athletes and spectators can look forward to a spirited performance by Idols Star, Jody Williams.

According to Dezroy Poole, Race Director Stillwater Sport & Entertainment, participants can look forward to a fun filled event. �We trust that being part of this annual event will be a memorable occasion for all participants, runners and spectators a like,� says Poole.
